Eritrea has a continental shelf of about 52,000 km2 in the 0–200m depth interval of the Red Sea. The total coastline runs to some 1,720 km, comprising 1,155 km along the continental shore and roughly 565 km around the numerous islands of the continental shelf. About 25% of the shelf is occupied by the Dahlak archipelago plateau, in the 0–35m depth interval. Its average width is variable, being widest (120 km) at the latitude of the Dahlaks themselves and quite narrow to the north (15 km) and south (30 km) of the archipelago.

Day 02 Asmara- Massawa

Driving to Massawa through the green belt would take the route primarily towards the Keren road. Then turning towards the east the journey would gradually descend through the much admired filfil- solomuna road, usually called the Green belt. The road initially built by the Italians as a weather road has been turned into a fine tarmac by the Government of Eritrea Visitors may feel as if they are driving above the clouds as they could apparently watch the clouds down the hill. Bird watching is glamorous in Filfil Solomuna Visitors can have a coffee break at Sabur or Medhanit.
Further driving towards the east the descending will continue. Visitors could have a stop-over at the Mai Wu’uii (the famous hot spring) found some 40 kilometers from Massawa. Continuing the journey visitors will witness the desert plains before reaching the port City of Massawa.
In Massawa fishing at any corner of the see is very fascinating. After such activities the visitor will stay overnight in Massawa.
