Eritrea, a small country in the horn of Africa, almost the size of England, was part of Ethiopia following successive colonial rulers that goes back to more than five centuries. Eritrea suffered successive colonial rulers under the Turks, Egyptians, and The Italians. The Italians were expelled by the British in 1941 in the battle of Keren, as part of their assistance to Ethiopia. The British continued to administer the territory under a UN Mandate until 1951. Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia in 1952 The Ethiopians annexed the country as part of their 14th Province in 1962. The people of Eritrea never embraced the federation. They therefore have to wage a bitter armed struggle that went on for three decades from 1961 until May 24, 1991. Following an UN-supervised referendum in Eritrea (dubbed UNOVER) in which the Eritrean people overwhelmingly voted for independence, Eritrea declared its independence and gained international recognition in 1993. Ever since May 24, is colorfully celebrated every year. Any visitor who happens to be in Eritrea on May 20 through May 24 will witness the carnival enjoyed by the people.
