According to the Julian calendar, Christmas falls on 7th January. The Coptic Eritreans celebrate two Christmas 25th of December and the 7th of January at September 1st Square. Every church’s Ark of the Covenant in the City moves to the site on the 18th of January. The priests spend the whole night in praise of the Lord with spectacular hymns adored by cymbals and drums.
The next day on the 19th Of January epiphany is celebrated in the presence of the Holiness of the Coptic Church, other church leaders, the Mayor of Asmara, and other dignitaries including resident embassies of different countries. Following the blessings of His Holiness water is sprinkled over onto the pilgrims by his Holiness.
