Keren Italian and the Commonwealth War Graves. At 91 kilometers from Asmara to the North West Keren has a unique history that saw the end of Italian Colonialism in Eritrea during the Second World War. Commonwealth armies came to help Ethiopia in the southwestern part of Ethiopia and to the North in Eritrea. It was a devastating war. On April 1 1941 the Italian army surrendered after suffering heavy losses.
In the center of the town, the Italians built a cemetery where there are more than 1200 graves. At the outskirts of Keren, where the War took place, the British built a cemetery where it contains 440 graves
